Music Department Chair

Joshua Gronlund is a passionate and accomplished music educator, performer, arranger, and music director. As a proud music educator, Gronlund has worked in his home state of Michigan, Brooklyn, New York and for the last nine years, in Los Angeles, primarily creating pipelines of access to high quality music education to students in inner-city neighborhoods. Gronlund founded South LA based H.O.P.E. choir at White Hall Arts Academy where singers from all ages came together in music and community. Most recently, Mr. Gronlund finished his tenure at Manual Arts High School in South LA where he founded the choral music and music technology programs. While serving as department chair, Gronlund supported in building commercial music, ceramic arts and theatre programs. Gronlund has also conducted and workshopped ensembles around the world, most notably as the director of the 2018 South Asian International Choral Festival in Kathmandu, Nepal.

As a vocalist, he has performed symphonic, theatrical and operatic works as well as pop and acapella works at various venues around the country. A lover of musical theatre, Gronlund has performed in everything from Sondheim to Shwartz. Currently, Gronlund is a member of the GRAMMY Award winning vocal ensemble Tonality, who harnesses the change-making powers of the arts to push the needle on important social justice issues. Trained in both popular music and classical music, Gronlund values both versatility and technique.

Gronlund is elated to join the faculty of LACHSA as the Music Department Chair. He is honored to have the opportunity to help students find their individuality and create art that speaks to their identities, communities and their souls. As students move from LACHSA to become professionals in their respective artist communities, Gronlund hopes that the impact they’ve had at LACHSA will continue to blossom out into the world.
