ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Thank you for your interest in applying to the LACHSA Theatre Department! Please review the following requirements for applying to our department.

OVERVIEW | APPLICATION PROCESS
STEP ONE
Start preparing your two contrasting monologues. Fully complete and submit the LACHSA online application by Friday, January 17, 2025.
STEP TWO
Record videos of you performing your two contrasting monologues following the guidelines below. Submit your video recordings by Friday, January 17, 2025.
STEP THREE
A limited number of applicants will be invited to a live callback audition at LACHSA on February 8, 2025. If granted a callback, see requirements below.
Please allow ample time to submit your online application and upload any required materials. Late or incomplete online applications will not be considered. The time and scheduling of auditions and callbacks is determined by the department and requests for specific audition times or dates cannot be accommodated. All auditions and/or callbacks will be held in person unless otherwise noted.
PLEASE NOTE - Interviews and callbacks are granted only if all general requirements for attending LACHSA have been met.

PRE-SCREEN VIDEOS | MONOLOGUES
WHAT TO PERFORM

Two (2) monologue selections

Each applicant will perform two (2) contrasting monologues that are no more than 2 mins in length (each).
​

Each applicant will perform a comedic monologue AND a dramatic monologue.
​

Monologues will come from published or unpublished work; such as a play, or from film or television scripts.
​

If you choose to perform original, unpublished work as one of your monologue choices, you must bring a copy of the monologue to your callback or live audition

HOW TO PERFORM
-
Students must wear all black clothing.
​
-
Please, no logos on clothing.
​
-
Please, no jewelry of any kind.
​
-
Student's hair must be tied back out of the face.
​
-
Your face and body should be clearly seen. No one else should be in the video.
​
-
State your name, then title & author of the piece at the beginning of each monologue.
​
-
No props or sounds should be in your video.​
HOW TO RECORD AND UPLOAD
-
Smartphone videos are preferred.
​
-
Camera must be in a fixed position. ​
​
-
Record each monologue in a single take from start to finish.
​
-
Shoot in a well-lit, indoor location in the spirit of a recital or audition.
​
-
Do not edit monologues/videos together.​​​
​

Each monologue will be recorded separately and uploaded to a file-sharing platform (ie. Vimeo, YouTube)

A link to submit your videos will be sent to applicants after November 1, 2024.
VIDEO DISCLAIMER: Applicants MAY NOT submit professional video recordings. Smart phone videos are preferred. Professional recordings will be disqualified - professional editing of any type is strictly prohibited and will disqualify your application.
CALLBACKS | MONOLOGUES
WHAT TO BRING
-
Students must wear all black, no logos.
-
Wear sweats or pants in which you can move freely.
-
Appropriate footwear - no flip flops, sandals or bare feet. Soft soled shoes are best.

No jewelry of any kind, no exceptions.
-
No costumes or props.
-
No theatrical make-up.
-
Hair pulled or tied back and completely out of your face for all students.
-
A bottle of water in a plastic container.
WHAT TO EXPECT
-
Students should arrive 10-15 minutes early before their callback audition time and wait quietly after checking in.
-
In the callback audition, you will be asked to state your name, the title and author of your two monologues as well as the name of the character.
-
Students will perform the same two monologues they did in their pre-screen videos.
-
Following your audition, all applicants will participate in a brief interview with the adjudicators.
PREPARING FOR THE PRE-SCREEN VIDEOS & CALLBACK AUDITION:

You are required to perform TWO contrasting monologues; one Comedic & one Dramatic.
-
Monologues will come from published or unpublished work; such as a play, or from film or television scripts. If you choose to perform original, unpublished work as one of your monologue choices, you must bring a copy of the monologue to your audition.

Each monologue must be no longer than 2 minutes in length.
-
Choose monologues featuring a character close to your actual age. Characters should be as natural, real, and as close to you in real life.
-
Students do not have to play "gender specific" roles. There are some universally powerful monologues that play well for male, female and non-binary.

During the call back audition, some applicants may be asked to do a cold reading or improvisation. Some applicants may be given directions and asked to repeat all or part of their monologue, incorporating those directions. No home preparation is required for this part of the audition.

Following your callback audition, all applicants will participate in a brief interview with the adjudicators.
